Block Printing Workshop in Jaipur: Create Two Printed Textiles
Print your own tote bag and cushion cover using wooden blocks and natural dyes
A 90-minute block printing class at Studio Berõ in Jaipur's center teaches you the craft hands-on: watch an artisan demonstrate, practice on fabric swatches, then design and print two finished pieces (a tote bag and cushion cover) to take home. The workshop covers the history of block printing, color combinations, and layering techniques, with instruction in English or Hindi.
The experience
The workshop opens with a short introduction to block printing's history and the artisans who practice it, then moves straight into a live demonstration. You'll watch how color is applied to wooden blocks and how proper alignment and pressure transfer the pattern onto fabric. This isn't a lecture: the artisan shows the technique in real time so you see exactly what happens when the block meets the cloth.
Before you start on your final pieces, you'll practice on a small fabric swatch. This gets your hands comfortable with the blocks, the colors, and the printing motion itself. Once you're ready, you design and print your own textiles using Studio Berõ's curated collection of wooden blocks. You'll create two pieces (a tote bag and a cushion cover) applying the color combinations and layering techniques you've learned. The pieces dry while you finish, and by the end of the 90 minutes, both are ready to pack.
The studio is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible, with public transportation nearby. Bottled water is provided. The class runs in English or Hindi, depending on the guide assigned to your session.
