The experience

The tour runs eight hours and covers five major stops across the city. You start at Mysore Palace, one of India's grandest buildings, rebuilt in the 20th century as the residence of the Wodeyar Dynasty who ruled from 1399 until independence in 1947. From there the guide takes you to St. Philomena's Cathedral, a Neo-Gothic structure completed in 1936 and one of Asia's tallest churches, then into Devaraja Market, the city's main marketplace where vendors sell crafts, apparel and food around an iconic clock tower.

The second half includes Jaganmohan Palace, built in 1861 and now an art gallery, and a sand-sculpture museum with detailed artwork. Your guide speaks English or Hindi and shares stories about the city's history, culture and local life at each stop. The car is air-conditioned throughout, and you get local tips and recommendations as you go. Lunch is on your own, as are entrance fees to the historical sites.
