The experience
The guide meets you at the Varaha South entrance gate of Mysore Palace, where parking is available and tickets are sold. The palace itself sprawls across 45 acres and was completed in 1912 by English architect Henry Irwin. Its grandeur comes from materials brought in from across the world: tiles from England, marble from Italy, chandeliers from Czechoslovakia, cast iron pillars and stained glass from Scotland, teak from Burma, and bronze jaguar statues from England. The palace has been ranked among the ten best in the world by the British travel site Original Travel. One half is managed by the state government. The other belongs to the royal Wodeyar family, and the grounds contain several temples as well.
From the palace, the walk moves to Jaganmohana Art Gallery, built in 1861 and now housing one of South India's most significant art collections. The gallery displays paintings by Raja Ravi Verma and Nikolai Roerich, the famous "Lady with the Lamp" by Haldenkar, and works by contemporary Indian artists. Beyond paintings, the exhibits include weapons, classical musical instruments, sculptures, brassware, and antique coins. A standout piece is a French clock with an internal mechanism that displays a parade of miniature soldiers every hour, with drums marking seconds and a bugle marking minutes. You'll remove your shoes here as well.
The final stop is Devaraja Market, a rectangular grid of stalls operating every day of the year with separate sections for vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Street vendors, perfume makers, chai sellers, garland makers, and color pigment sellers work the aisles. The market is dense enough that visitors often lose track of where they came in. It functions as a working microcosm of Indian commerce and daily life, not a tourist attraction staged for cameras.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to move through Mysore's landmarks on foot rather than by vehicle: the city's layout and character reveal themselves better at walking pace, and the guide's knowledge of the palace's architecture, the gallery's collections, and the market's daily rhythms makes the difference between passing through and understanding what you're seeing. The option to include entrance tickets simplifies the logistics. Excluding them gives you flexibility if you want to linger at any stop.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.
What's inside Mysore Palace that makes it worth the visit?
Mysore Palace contains Indo-Saracenic architecture completed in 1912, with imported materials including Italian marble, English tiles, Scottish stained glass, and Burmese teak. The palace sits on 45 acres and includes several temples on the grounds. One half is state-managed and open to visitors while the other remains the residence of the royal Wodeyar family.
What kind of art does the Jaganmohana Art Gallery actually hold?
Jaganmohana Art Gallery houses paintings by Raja Ravi Verma and Nikolai Roerich, the famous "Lady with the Lamp" work by Haldenkar, and contemporary Indian art, along with sculptures, classical instruments, weapons, brassware, and antique coins. A French clock with a mechanical soldier parade that performs every hour is among the most unusual pieces.
Is Devaraja Market just for tourists, or is it a working market?
Devaraja Market operates year-round as a working market with separate sections for vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Street vendors, perfume makers, garland makers, and color pigment sellers work the rectangular grid of stalls daily. It functions as a living marketplace, not a staged attraction.
Do I need to bring anything special for this walk?
Spare socks are recommended because you'll remove your shoes at both Mysore Palace and the art gallery. The walk covers three to four hours on foot through the city center, and comfortable walking shoes are essential.
Can I book this tour without paying entrance fees upfront?
Yes, you can choose the option excluding entrance tickets at checkout and pay them separately at each site, or include them in your booking. Either way, the guide meets you at the palace gate and leads the full three-stop walk.
