The Experience

Bantu waved at someone across the street before we’d even left the Clock Tower. I guess everyone really does know him in Jodhpur. He handed me a bottle of water and grinned, “Ready?” I was still adjusting to the way the city smells—spices, dust, something sweet from a cart nearby. The first stop was Toorji ka Jhalra. I didn’t expect it to be so quiet down by the stepwell, just our footsteps echoing and Bantu telling us how a queen built it centuries ago. There was a kid splashing his feet at the edge—he smiled at us but didn’t say anything.

Pachetia Hill took more effort than I thought (maybe I shouldn’t have worn sandals), but that 360-degree view over the Blue City was worth every awkward step. The houses really are painted all those shades of blue—I tried counting them but lost track. Wind up there tastes like stone and sun. Bantu pointed out Mehrangarh Fort in the distance and told us about Navchowkiya, this old Brahmpuri colony from 1459. We wandered into its narrowest lanes where two women were stringing marigolds together; one laughed when my friend tried to pronounce “Brahmpuri” right.

We stopped for chai near Ranisar Lake, which looked almost silver in the late morning light. The tea was hot enough to burn my tongue (I never learn), but paired with that flaky samosa—yeah, that’s something I still think about. Bantu shared stories about his childhood swimming in these lakes, which made me wish I’d grown up somewhere you could just wander into history like this. By then my shirt was sticking to my back and I realized how much walking we’d done without really noticing.

I kept catching myself looking back over my shoulder for another glimpse of those painted walls or maybe just hoping for one more story from Bantu.
