The experience
Two hours takes you through the layered history of Jodhpur's blue city on foot with a guide who has studied tourism and knows the architecture, culture and stories behind each stop. You start at Stepwell Square, where the 1740 stepwell built by Queen Toor Kanwar Ji shows the craftsmanship that has held for over 250 years. From there the walk moves through heritage houses and the old textile market, where you'll see artisans making bangles and ornaments by hand.
The route passes through a historic circle marked by nine entry points into the city, one of the oldest wells, and a ficus tree that has stood for 250 years: each one a landmark with its own history. Then you enter the blue-painted colony itself, where the houses and streets are painted in the distinctive indigo that gives the city its name. The guide explains why this color matters and what it meant to the people who chose it. You'll have time to photograph the architecture and the painted walls as you move through.
The walk ends at Sunset Hill, where you can see across the whole city from above. You'll spend time there, have refreshments, and talk through the day before heading back by a shortcut route that passes through wall paintings and the local market. A licensed English-speaking guide leads the group throughout.
