The experience

The owner drives the tuk-tuk himself, which means you're not getting a script but someone who has spent years in Jaipur and can answer questions about what you're seeing as you pass through. He picks you up from your hotel, airport, or railway station and takes you through the city's main attractions over nine to ten hours. The tuk-tuk is private (just you and the driver), so there's no waiting for other passengers or sticking to a fixed itinerary if something catches your eye.

Hawa Mahal, the pink pyramid-shaped Palace of the Winds, comes with the story of how its latticework windows let the royal ladies see out without being seen. Jantar Mantar, the World Heritage astronomical observatory, holds massive sundials and angular instruments the royal astronomers used to track celestial movements. The central one keeps time within two seconds. City Palace sits nearby, still home to Jaipur's Royal Family, and you can see the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces within the complex. Outside the city, Jal Mahal floats on Man Sagar Lake, a 17th-century water palace that once belonged to the royal family. Albert Hall Museum, the state museum of Rajasthan, houses paintings, jewelry, carpets, and sculptures in a building that blends Indo-Saracenic architecture.

The route also passes Amber Fort, eleven kilometers outside the city on a hilltop, where you can walk the ancient road to the entrance or take a jeep, golf cart, or elephant ride if you prefer not to walk. Near it stands a 16th-century step well with eight levels descending to the water. You'll also drive through one of Jaipur's bazaars (busy shopping streets selling spices, fruit, jewelry, clothes, and traditional metalwork), and can walk around or stay in the tuk-tuk. Water and tea are included. Fuel, parking, and taxes are covered. Admission fees to individual monuments are paid separately at each site.
