The experience
Eklingji sits 20 km north of Udaipur as a religious complex of 108 temples carved from sandstone and marble. The main temple was originally built by Bappa Rawal in the 8th century, destroyed during Delhi Sultanate invasions, then rebuilt in stages: Hamir Singh restored it in the 14th century, Rana Kumbha added a Vishnu temple in the 15th, and after another attack, Rana Raimal reconstructed it again. The temple complex belonged first to the Pashupata sect, then came under Nath sect control in the 16th century. You spend several hours walking through the complex, examining the carved stonework and the layered history of each renovation.
Nagda lies 23 km northwest of Udaipur beside Bagela Lake, on the way toward Nathdwara. The Sahasra Bahu Temples, also called Sas Bahu, are a pair of 10th-century shrines dedicated to Virabhadra, built in Māru-Gurjara style with a sanctuary, mandapa and open porch. The larger temple is surrounded by ten subsidiary shrines. The smaller by four. While the exteriors are mostly plain, the interiors and porches are lavishly carved. The smaller temple's shikhara has been restored. The larger one remains truncated. Nearby stands an ancient Jain center, the Adbhutji Shanthinath Jain Tirth. Both temple sites are listed as heritage monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India. Nagda itself was once an important Mewar city, possibly a capital, until Iltutmish destroyed it in 1226.
Your driver speaks English and handles all transport between Udaipur and both sites. You choose between a private sedan for one to three passengers or a tuk-tuk. Either way, hotel pickup and drop-off are included. The tour runs four to five hours, so you're back in the city by early afternoon.
What’s included
- Hotel pickup and drop-off in Udaipur.
- private transport by sedan or tuk-tuk with an English-speaking driver.
- access to both temple complexes for the full four to five hours of the tour.

Top questions
What is the Eklingji Temple complex, and why was it rebuilt so many times?
Eklingji is a 108-temple complex in Kailashpuri, originally built in the 8th century by Bappa Rawal as the Kula Devata (family deity) of the Mewar Dynasty. It was destroyed during Delhi Sultanate invasions, then rebuilt in stages: Hamir Singh restored it in the 14th century and installed the first surviving idol, Rana Kumbha added a Vishnu temple in the 15th century, and after Ghiyath Shah's late 15th-century attack, Rana Raimal reconstructed it again using ransom money. The temple shifted from Pashupata to Nath sect control in the 16th century.
What are the Sahasra Bahu Temples in Nagda, and what makes them distinctive?
The Sahasra Bahu Temples are a pair of 10th-century Hindu shrines dedicated to Virabhadra, built in Māru-Gurjara architectural style. The larger temple is surrounded by ten subsidiary shrines and the smaller by four, both sharing a platform. Their exteriors are mostly plain, but the interiors and porches feature lavish carved stonework. The smaller temple's shikhara has been restored. The larger remains truncated. They are listed as heritage monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India.
How far is Nagda from Udaipur, and what else is nearby?

Do I travel by tuk-tuk or car, and does it affect the tour?
