The Experience

The marble of the Taj Mahal had this strange glow—almost blue in the early light. I was still half-asleep when our guide waved us over to a quieter corner. “Best spot for photos,” he whispered. There were birds everywhere, and you could hear them over the soft shuffle of other visitors. I thought I’d be overwhelmed by crowds but it felt peaceful, maybe because everyone was just quietly staring up at it. The air smelled faintly like wet stone and flowers from the gardens. I tried to imagine building something like that for love—couldn’t really.

We left for Agra Fort next, which is only about 15 minutes away by car. The driver played old Bollywood songs on low volume (I recognized none). Inside the fort, our guide pointed out marks on the sandstone walls—“Here, Shah Jahan watched the Taj from his prison.” It was heavier than I expected, all those stories layered in red stone. My shoes kept slipping on smooth floors; I laughed at myself more than once. There’s a view of the Taj from one of the balconies that made me stop talking for a minute.

Lunch was at some fancy hotel—I’m not used to five-star places but they didn’t seem to mind my travel-worn t-shirt. The butter chicken was honestly perfect (the naan too). After that we drove out to Fatehpur Sikri through stretches of fields and roadside tea stalls. Our guide told stories about Emperor Akbar’s city—how it was abandoned because of water shortages. The Buland Darwaza gate looked almost unreal against the sky. Kids ran past us playing cricket in the dust near Jama Masjid; I tried to take a photo but mostly just watched.

I still think about that first sight of the Taj Mahal at sunrise—it’s not something you can really prepare for, you know? By sunset we were back in Agra, tired but kind of wired from everything we’d seen. If you want a day trip from Agra that covers all three places without any hassle (and includes pickup), this one worked out better than I expected.
