The experience
Two days gives you time to move between Jaipur's scattered sites without rushing. Day one focuses on the old city: you'll start at 9 AM with pickup from your hotel, then visit Hawa Mahal (the palace of winds, built in 1799 with its distinctive latticed screens), City Palace (the palace complex designed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh), and Jantar Mantar, which holds the world's largest stone sundial and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The itinerary also includes Isarlat (a 140-foot tower once the tallest building in the pink city), Albert Hall Museum with its 16 art galleries, and Birla Mandir, constructed entirely of white marble. You'll end the day browsing Johri Bazar and Bapu Bazar in the old markets.
Day two shifts to the forts and palaces outside the city center. You'll see Jal Mahal, the palace on Man Singh Sagar Lake (entry is restricted, but you can view it from the water), then head to Amber Fort, the massive palace complex 11 km from the city built in pale yellow and pink sandstone. Jaigarh Fort, home to the Jaivana cannon (the world's largest cannon on wheels when it was made in 1720), sits nearby. Nahargarh Fort and Royal Gaitor (the maharajas' tombs in a quiet setting away from crowds) round out the second day. Your driver and guide handle all navigation. Fuel, parking, tolls and taxes are covered in the price.
The guide is live and speaks your language: English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Mandarin or Hindi. Children from age 6 are welcome. Infants can ride in a pram or sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. Monument entrance fees are not included, so budget separately for the sites you want to enter.
