The experience
What does it take to get from the coast up to a crater lake inside a morning? The drive climbs into Grenada's interior, and as the landscape shifts toward the mountains, the guide points out the plants and animals that mark the tropical zones you're moving through. Grand Etang National Park sits at the center of this route. The lake itself is 1,800 feet above sea level and one of only two crater lakes on the island. You walk into the rainforest on a guided path, feed the lake's fish at the water's edge, and stand where you can see Mount Qua Qua across the water.
Annandale Falls is the second major stop, a cascade that drops over rock into pools surrounded by tropical gardens. The guide shows you the flowers and trees, but the main draw is the sound and the spray. You can stand in the gardens or move closer to the water depending on what appeals to you. Fort Frederick, perched on Richmond Hill above St. George's, closes the loop with a 360-degree view of the capital: the Carenage below, the mountain ridges to the north, the town spreading out in all directions. The fort's arches and multiple levels give you different angles on the same vista.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and pickup comes from your hotel. The guide speaks English and knows the park well enough to answer questions about what grows here and what lives here. The whole tour runs between two and three hours, which means you're back with time left in the day.
