The experience

The Zagori area sits behind the mountains of Epirus, and the name itself means "behind the mountain." What makes it distinct is how the villages are built: stone houses, churches, monasteries and bridges all constructed from local rock, creating an architectural landscape that has stayed intact for centuries. You'll visit Megalo and Mikro Papigo, twin settlements at the foot of Astraka Mountain, where five imposing stone towers rise above the rooflines. The Information Center of Nature and Culture in Zagori sits in Mikro Papigo, and from there the tour moves through the smaller natural pools called Rogovos swimming pools before reaching the Papigko bridge, built in 1923 and set among plane trees along the Voidomatis River.

The Voidomatis is the coldest river in Europe, with water temperatures between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius year-round, and it flows through the core of the Vikos-Aoos National Park. The tour's centerpiece is the Oxya viewpoint, a balcony positioned in the middle of Vikos Gorge itself, where the scale of the landscape becomes impossible to ignore: layers of rock formations rise in shapes that resemble stacked stone pancakes. You'll also visit Dilofo village, built at 1,060 meters on the southwest side of the gorge with its own stunning cliff-edge views, and see the most famous single-arched stone bridge in the Zagori area, built in 1750 between Dilofo, Kipoi and Koukouli. The tour includes a stop at a Handicraft School dedicated to the cultural and social development of the region.

Transportation is private, so the pace is set by the stops rather than by group timing. An experienced guide fluent in English or Greek leads the day, and hotel pickup is included. The tour runs 6 to 8 hours depending on how long you spend at each viewpoint and village. Bottled water is provided throughout, and all entrance fees and taxes are covered in the price.

Is this one for you?The tour runs 6 to 8 hours with walking between villages and viewpoints, so a moderate pace and comfortable shoes matter. Private transportation means you set the rhythm at each stop rather than keeping to a group schedule, which works well for families with children from age 4 and for anyone who wants time to photograph the gorge views or linger in the villages.
