The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Ioannina and a drive into Zagori, the region whose name means "the place behind the mountain." The first stop is Vikos village at 770 metres, where the gorge opens below you: a view that frames the scale of what you're about to enter. From there the route descends to the Voidomatis river, one of Europe's clearest and coldest rivers, where you'll swim in its silvery water (weather permitting) before moving on to the rock pools of Papingo, natural basins formed by the river between the two Papingo villages.

The villages themselves are the rhythm of the afternoon. You'll walk through Mikro Papingo to visit the information centre of Vikos-Aoos National Park, then stop in Megalo Papingo, the most visited village in Zagoria, for coffee or juice in a local shop and time to wander the narrow stone streets. The route then climbs to Monodendri, where Oxya viewpoint sits at the highest vantage of the gorge, and includes a short stop at the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi before finishing at Vitsa, a two-part village of stone houses and paved paths at 960 metres. Lunch is included during the day, and your guide handles the timing and the route. You walk between stops and choose whether to swim when the water is calm enough.

The Voidomatis is the constant. You'll return to it, see it from above, and feel its presence through the gorge. Its waters are cold but refreshing, and the river is the reason this route works as a single day from Ioannina.
