The Experience

“The sea here, she has moods,” Captain George said as we stepped barefoot onto the deck in Vlychada. He grinned like he’d known the Aegean forever — probably has, honestly. I didn’t expect to feel that mix of nerves and excitement as the ropes came off and the boat eased out, but there it was. The morning air tasted salty, almost metallic, and my friend Anna kept laughing at how quickly her hair turned wild from the wind.

We stopped near Red Beach first — those cliffs really do look painted. George slowed the yacht so we could take photos (he even offered to snap one for us). Then White Beach flashed by, quieter than I thought it’d be. Crossing between the volcanoes felt unreal; you see that caldera view on postcards but it’s different when you’re actually there, sun flickering on the water and all that empty blue space around you. I tried to ask about the lighthouse in Greek — Li laughed when I butchered it — but George just nodded like he understood anyway.

The best part? Swimming in Thirasia’s bay. The water was cold at first but then perfect; someone on board found a smooth black stone shaped like a heart and passed it around. Lunch was cooked right there — simple stuff, mostly from Santorini: tomatoes that tasted like sunshine, grilled fish with lemon. The smell drifted over while we dried off in patches of sun on deck. I still think about that meal sometimes.

On the way back, we passed this rock they call “the crocodile.” It does look a bit like one if you squint — or maybe that was just me getting tired from all the sun. Anyway, we trailed home past Aspronisi with skin sticky from salt and everyone a little quieter than before. There’s something about being out there with just a handful of people and someone who knows these waters by heart… hard to explain unless you go.
