The experience

The boat, a 48-foot wooden vessel named Giorgaros, departs from the official fishermen's harbour after your driver brings you there from your hotel. On the sail south along Santorini's coast, you pass the volcanic cliffs of Red Beach and the Vlichadas formations: both stops for photos if the light holds. The captain, who fishes these waters year-round, shows you how to bait the line and cast. The catch is usually medium-sized rock fish and breams, though barracuda and larger species turn up occasionally. Children 10 and up fish alongside adults with the captain's hands-on help.

The main stop is White Beach, where the water is clear enough to see the fish below. You swim, snorkel, sunbathe and drink for as long as the schedule allows. Lunch happens here too: your morning's catch, cooked on board or prepared fresh, eaten on the boat or in the water. The drinks are unlimited: Santorini wine, beer, ouzo, bottled water and coffee. You'll also pass the lighthouse at the island's edge and the Rock of Indian, a volcanic formation rising 200 meters from the sea near Akrotiri.

The tour runs 5 hours total. You can book a morning departure or a sunset fishing tour. Both include the same route, the same fishing and snorkeling time, and the same meal. A guide speaks English, Arabic or Greek depending on the option you choose. Transportation from your hotel and back is part of the booking, as are the fishing rods, hand lines, trolling gear and bait, plus snorkeling equipment and towels.
