The Samaria Gorge hike is a 16km descent through Crete's most famous gorge, starting early in the morning and lasting 5–6 hours depending on pace. You walk the length of the riverbed past lakes and boulders, cross water sources and toilets along the way, then take a boat from the gorge mouth to Sfakia and a bus ride back to your hotel. A local guide leads the group, provides a professional map, and collects the gorge entrance fee at the start. Pickup is included from Rethymnon or Panormos area.

The Experience

The hike starts before dawn. You'll be picked up from your hotel in the Rethymnon or Panormos area and driven to Xyloskalo, a tavern at the gorge entrance where the group stops to use the toilet, buy food or eat a quick breakfast, and meet Kostas, your local guide. He knows the gorge better than anyone and will hand you a professional map of the route. At Xyloskalo, Kostas collects the money for the gorge entrance fee and your boat ticket out—both handled there, not in advance.

The descent is 16 kilometers through the riverbed itself. You'll cross a landscape of little lakes, huge rocks, and the dry torrent, moving at a pace that depends on the group. Water sources and toilet facilities are scattered along the way. Kostas stays with the slowest walkers, so nobody finishes alone. The hike takes 5 to 6 hours depending on how the group moves. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a bottle of water and some fruit—the water stops mean you don't have to carry everything, but you'll want your own supplies for the first stretch.

When you reach the mouth of the gorge at Sfakia, a boat is waiting to take the group out to sea. From there, the bus picks you up and drives you back to your hotel. The whole day—pickup, hike, boat and return drive—runs 12 to 15 hours from start to finish. An air-conditioned vehicle handles the transport both ways, and you get a professional map to keep.
