The experience

You leave Chania behind and drive south into Sfakia, where the White Mountains rise above gorges and plateaus that have never fully submitted to foreign rule. The first stop is a family-owned cheese and yogurt factory, where you sit down for a local breakfast and learn how the cheesemonger makes the island's best yogurt the traditional way. From there you climb to the Askifou Plateau at 730 metres, a high valley ringed by the White Mountains, and begin your hike into the Imbros Gorge.

The gorge itself is an 8-kilometre walk through narrow passages and geological formations that takes about two and a half hours at an easy pace. Your guide shares the history that makes this place matter: in May 1941, ANZAC soldiers fleeing the German invasion used this gorge as their only escape route to reach Egypt. If you have any connection to that story (Australian, New Zealand, British, or WWII history), walking it feels almost like a pilgrimage. The guide carries stories about the Sfakians who resisted occupation and the land that refused to be conquered.

After the hike you reach Kallikratis, a semi-abandoned mountain village perched among ravines and plateaus. Here you participate in a hands-on cooking class, learning the secrets of Cretan cuisine as you prepare and eat traditional dishes with local wine. Next door, in a small café, you meet the owners of a herbal sanctuary who distill Cretan herbs and make natural products the traditional way. They explain how to use over 1,800 plant species in your cooking and let you taste their concoctions. The day ends at a local winery, where you discover one of Crete's best cellars before your guide drives you back to your accommodation.

What is the Imbros Gorge and why do ANZAC soldiers matter to it?

The Imbros Gorge is an 8-kilometre passage through narrow rock formations in Sfakia that served as the only escape route in May 1941 for ANZAC soldiers fleeing the German invasion of Crete. They used it to reach the coast and sail to Egypt. Walking it today connects you to that history.

How difficult is the hike through the Imbros Gorge?

The hike is an easy walk lasting about two and a half hours, following the gorge floor through geological formations and narrow passages. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though the operator does not recommend it for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.

What do you actually do in Kallikratis village?

In Kallikratis you participate in a hands-on cooking class where you learn Cretan cuisine secrets and prepare traditional dishes with local wine, then eat what you've made. Afterward you visit a herbal sanctuary café where the owners explain how to use Cretan herbs in cooking and let you sample their products.

What are the White Mountains and where do you see them?

The White Mountains, also called Lefka Ori, are the massive peaks that dominate Sfakia, including Pachnes, the highest summit. You see them from the Askifou Plateau where your hike begins, and they frame the landscape throughout the day.

Does the tour include lunch?

Lunch is not included in the tour price, but you have time to eat at a local restaurant in the area. Your guide gives personalized tips for the best eateries nearby.
