The experience
What does a day in Imbros Gorge actually look like? You start with pickup from your hotel or meeting point, then spend the morning and early afternoon walking the gorge itself: a labyrinth of rock formations and narrow passages that make it Crete's second most popular gorge for good reason. Your guide is a local who knows the area's stories: the geological history, the plants and animals that live here, the way the landscape has shaped the villages around it. You walk at your own pace, which means no rushing and no waiting for a slower group to catch up. Families with children can add nature games and kid-friendly activities along the way if they want them.
After the hike, you head to a traditional taverna in the village of Askifou, tucked away from the main roads. The food comes from local, organic ingredients: the kind of farm-to-table cooking that tastes different when you eat it in the place where it's grown. You'll have time to sit, eat, and let the day settle before the drive back.
The whole day runs about eight hours from pickup to drop-off. You get bottled water and snacks during the hike, and a private guide who speaks English, Spanish, French or Greek depending on what you need. Transportation, entrance fees and the guide are all included. You arrange lunch separately if you want more than what the taverna offers.
