The experience
The trek starts by leaving the usual tourist route behind. You follow a path through the forest that opens onto Megalos Potamos, the river that carved the gorge, and spend the next few hours moving through water and over rock. The neoprene suit keeps you warm as you wade and swim through cold pools. The helmet protects you on scrambles over boulders. A walking stick steadies your footing on slick stone. The guide points out the landscape and sets the pace so the group stays together without rushing.
The centerpiece is a waterfall that drops into a pool deep enough to swim in. You'll spend time in the water here, and this is where most of the photos happen: the gorge walls rise around you, the spray catches the light, and the sound of falling water fills the space. After the waterfall, the trek continues downstream through quieter sections of the gorge where the forest closes in overhead and the river narrows.
At the end of the path sits the banana garden, a hidden spot where you stop to rest, dry off and eat a light lunch. This is where the group talks through the day and the guide answers questions about the gorge and the Cretan landscape. The whole outing takes 5 hours from start to finish. You'll need to bring 5 euros in cash for the entrance ticket. Everything else (the suit, helmet, phone case, walking stick and lunch) is provided.
