The experience

The day starts with a two-hour drive south from Chania, leaving the main roads behind. Your English-speaking local guide meets you at a small seaside village where you begin with a light breakfast of local organic olives, rusks and cheese. From there, you follow an easy trail under old pine trees toward Lissos, the ancient city that once thrived as a trading and fishing hub until an earthquake emptied it centuries ago. Most of it remains unexcavated. Archaeologists believe temples dedicated to the goddess Diktinna still lie buried underground.

The trail climbs to a hilltop with views of the gorge and the sea beyond, then descends to a barrel plateau where rocks meet the water. This is where the Asclepieion stood: a healing temple built in the third century B.C.E. for the god Asclepius. You have an hour to walk the ruins, drink from the spring that fed the ancient therapeutic ceremonies, and observe the herbs and plants still used in Cretan cooking. After an easy half-hour walk, you reach a sandy beach with fine pebbles, where a fishing boat waits to carry you along the south coast for two hours of swimming in clear water and fresh fruit.

The boat takes you to a remote village where lunch is a 3-course meal of locally farmed ingredients, washed down with local wine. Before the drive back to Chania, you have time to walk the promenade and back streets of Paleochora, the coastal fishing village that drew hippies decades ago. Your guide offers tips on restaurants and hidden spots for the rest of your stay.

What is the ancient city of Lissos and why was it abandoned?

Lissos was one of the most powerful trading and fishing hubs in ancient Crete until a destructive earthquake suddenly emptied it. Most of the site remains unexcavated today, with archaeologists believing important structures like the temple to the goddess Diktinna are still buried underground.

How long is the hike through the gorge to Lissos?

The hike follows an easy trail for 90 minutes under old pine trees, climbing to a hilltop with views of the gorge and sea, then descending to the ruins of the Asclepieion healing temple.

What is the healing water at Asclepieion and where does it come from?

The Asclepieion was a healing temple built in the third century B.C.E. dedicated to the god Asclepius. A spring at the site supplied water used in ancient therapeutic ceremonies and healing sessions. You drink from this same spring during the tour.

Will I swim during this tour?

Yes. After the hike and exploring the ruins, you board a fishing boat that takes you to a secluded beach where you swim in the Mediterranean for about two hours, with fresh fruit provided.

What does the farm-to-table meal include?

Lunch is a 3-course meal made entirely from locally farmed products, served in a remote village. The meal comes with local wine. Vegetarian and other dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice.
