The experience

The day starts at Filerimos, an archaeological site on a hilltop overlooking the Aegean. The ancient Acropolis of Ialyssos once stood here, and a 13th-century icon brought from Jerusalem is housed in the monastery. Peacocks roam the grounds and will pose for photos if you bring bread from breakfast. From there, the route moves to Butterfly Valley, where thousands of butterflies blanket the landscape each late May when the oriental sweet-gum trees release their scent. You'll stop at a section of the valley that doesn't charge admission. If you want to venture deeper into the protected area, that entrance fee is separate.

Seven Springs comes next: a forested ravine fed by seven natural springs that flow year-round and form a small lake. The Italians built the lake to supply fresh water to the nearby village of Kolympia, and the spot is cool enough to break the heat of a Rhodes summer. Pine trees and running water make it feel like a pocket of the mountains dropped into the island. After that, you reach Lindos, the village most photographed in Greece, with its cubic white houses cascading down a hillside beneath the Acropolis. You get an hour to climb to the ancient ruins, walk the narrow alleys, or swim at one of the three beaches below.

The final stop is Rhodes Medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Knights of St. John. An hour here lets you walk the Street of the Knights, see the Grand Master Palace and the Archeological Museum, and wander the Jewish Quarter and Ippokratous Square. The route can shift depending on where you're staying and what you want to see. The operator can also arrange stops in the mountain villages of Embona, Siana or Monolithos if you contact them after booking.
