From there, the route moves to Butterfly Valley, where thousands of butterflies blanket the landscape each late May when the oriental sweet-gum trees release their scent. You'll stop at a section of the valley that doesn't charge admission; if you want to venture deeper into the protected area, that entrance fee is separate.

Seven Springs comes next—a forested ravine fed by seven natural springs that flow year-round and form a small lake. The Italians built the lake to supply fresh water to the nearby village of Kolympia, and the spot is cool enough to break the heat of a Rhodes summer. Pine trees and running water make it feel like a pocket of the mountains dropped into the island. After that, you reach Lindos, the village most photographed in Greece, with its cubic white houses cascading down a hillside beneath the Acropolis. You get an hour to climb to the ancient ruins, walk the narrow alleys, or swim at one of the three beaches below.

The final stop is Rhodes Medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Knights of St. John.
