The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Kalabaka or Kastraki around 9 a.m., then moves through the Meteora landscape in a private air-conditioned minibus or car. Your guide (a local who speaks your language) explains the geological forces that created these rock formations and the history of how monks established one of Greece's largest monastic communities on top of them. You'll stop at the best viewpoints for photographs and walk short stretches to see the formations up close.

All six monasteries are visible during the tour, but you pick which two or three to enter. The guide accompanies you inside whichever ones you choose, sharing details about the monastic life, the art and the architecture.
