The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way the rocks looked—almost purple in the late afternoon, like someone had painted shadows right onto them. We met outside this little office in Kalampaka (I was nervous about the e-bike but honestly, they made it easy). Our guide, Dimitris, handed out water and reflective vests—he joked that we’d look like a flock of canaries riding into the hills. The bikes were actually kind of fun to ride; you barely feel the climb as you leave town and start winding up toward Meteora.

I still remember that smell—somewhere between pine needles and dust after rain. Dimitris kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed: an old fig tree, some goats balancing on impossible ledges. We stopped near Kastraki where he told us about the monks who built these monasteries centuries ago—he even tried teaching us a Greek word for “rock forest” but I definitely butchered it (he laughed). There were only seven of us, so it felt more like a group of friends than a tour.

We kept stopping for photos, but honestly sometimes I just wanted to stand there and watch the light change on Varlaam and Great Meteoron. At one point we had snacks—something sweet and crumbly that tasted homemade—and sat quietly while the sun started dipping behind the mountains. Someone asked if people still live in these monasteries (they do), and Dimitris explained how life here moves slower than anywhere else he knows. That stuck with me.

The last stop was this viewpoint where you could see almost all of Thessaly spread out below. It got quiet except for birds somewhere down in the valley. The ride back was mostly downhill—cool air on my face, legs barely working—and I kept thinking about how different everything looked at dusk compared to midday. Even now when I see photos of Meteora, I remember that feeling more than anything else.

What’s included

Your day includes use of an e-bike fitted to your size, water to keep you refreshed along the way, reflective vests for safety as dusk falls, rain ponchos or extra layers if needed, plus local homemade snacks shared at scenic stops—all guided by someone who knows these roads by heart before returning to Kalampaka together.
