Walk inside three of six monasteries perched on Meteora's rock pillars

A full-day tour from Athens combines train travel to Kalambaka with a guided visit to Meteora's six historic monasteries, three of which you enter. The train departs at 6:58 AM from Larissis station; you'll see all six monasteries from outside and walk through three interiors, including Great Meteoron (the oldest and largest) and the clifftop Holy Trinity where a James Bond film was shot. Round-trip rail tickets, minibus transport, bottled water and a local English-speaking guide are included; you'll need cash (5 euros per monastery) for entrance fees at each site.

Step-by-step itinerary

Meteora day trip from Athens

  • Depart Athens from Larissis station
  • Train ride to Paleofarsalos
  • Change to connecting bus to Kalambaka
  • Meet guide in Kalambaka
  • Visit six monasteries, tour three
  • Lunch and break in Kalambaka
  • Return to Athens by train

The Experience

The day starts early at Larissis, Athens's central railway station, where you board the 6:58 AM train to Kalambaka. The journey crosses the Greek countryside for roughly three hours, stopping at Paleofarsalos around 9:45 AM so you can switch to a connecting bus that completes the route. On arrival in Kalambaka, your guide meets you at the station holding a signboard with your name, and you transfer to a Mercedes minibus for the short drive up to Meteora itself.

Once at Meteora, the guide walks you through the site to view all six remaining monasteries from the outside—Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Saint Stephens, Holy Trinity, Roussanou and Saint Nicholas—then leads you inside three of them depending on the day's schedule. Great Meteoron is the oldest and largest; Varlaam is the second biggest; Saint Stephens is the most accessible; Holy Trinity sits on the hardest-to-reach cliff (and was the filming location for a James Bond movie); Roussanou offers an easier climb; and Saint Nicholas is the first you encounter on the approach. You'll wander through the interiors, seeing the Christian architecture and iconography built up over more than 700 years. The guide explains the history and significance of each site as you move through them.

After the monastery tour, you have about an hour in Kalambaka's city center to grab lunch, a coffee or visit the food market in the shadow of the giant rocks. Then you're transferred back to the train station for the return journey to Athens. The minibus has Wi-Fi and USB chargers on board, and you'll receive your e-tickets by email a few days before departure. Small groups keep the experience more personal than a large coach tour would.

Operated by Meteora Rocks

Is this one for you? You're on a shared tour with a small group and a guide leading the way, so the pace and the stops are set—you don't arrange the train schedule or decide which monasteries to enter. This works best if you want the full history and architecture explained as you walk through each site, and if you prefer not to navigate the rock paths or figure out which monastery is open on the day you arrive.
