Taste olive oil the way a sommelier does, then understand what makes one worth buying.

A two-hour olive oil tasting and education activity in Kalentzi, near Athens, led by an olive oil sommelier in a family-owned grove. You walk through Manaki olive trees, learn tasting techniques to identify quality and flaws, sample oils with Greek food pairings, and discover the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. Children from age 5 are welcome. The guide speaks English and Greek.

The experience

The activity starts at a small chapel, St. Efrem, and moves into a traditional family olive grove where you'll walk among rare Manaki olive trees. The sommelier explains the cultivation methods, sustainable practices and the family's history on the land. From the grove, you look out across Mt. Fokas (the mythical slopes where the Lion of Nemea was born), and the vineyard terraces below. This is where the tasting happens, with the landscape itself part of the lesson.

The tasting teaches you to evaluate olive oil the way professionals do: how to spot fruitiness, pungency and bitterness, and how to recognize award-winning qualities as well as the flaws to avoid. You'll learn the categories of olive oil, the principles behind tasting, and the health benefits that make it central to the Mediterranean diet. The sommelier pairs each oil with small Greek meze, traditional appetizers, so you understand how different oils work in the kitchen and at the table. By the end, you'll have the knowledge to choose an olive oil from a shelf instead of guessing, and to see it as part of your nutrition and well-being.

Is this one for you?Two hours is short enough to fit into a day trip from Athens without dominating your schedule, but long enough to move from the grove into the tasting and actually absorb the technique. If you want to understand olive oil instead of just buying it, this is built around that learning, not a quick stop.
