The Experience
By the time I’d picked up the chisel, my hands already smelled faintly of stone dust and coffee. Maggie—our instructor, who’s got this calm way about her—was showing us how to hold the hammer just right. She smiled when I admitted I’d never carved anything before (unless you count failed attempts at soap in grade school). The marble blocks came from Naxos itself, she said, which felt kind of special—like we were borrowing a piece of the island for a few hours.
The sun kept shifting behind some olive trees, and every so often you’d hear cicadas start up again. There was bottled water on the table but I stuck to tea at first, mostly for something warm to hold while Maggie explained the difference between each tool. She let us pick from Archaic Greek designs or our own ideas—I tried a spiral, but it turned into more of a wobbly wave. Not sure if that’s ancient or just me. The sound of everyone tapping away was oddly soothing; nobody rushed or cared much about mistakes.
I caught myself zoning out sometimes, just watching sunlight catch on the white marble dust as it drifted down onto my shoes. At one point Maggie told us about sculptors who worked these stones centuries ago—she made it sound almost ordinary, like anyone could do it if they had patience and strong wrists. When we finished, I wrapped my little relief in paper and felt weirdly proud carrying it back through the quiet path out front. Still thinking about that feeling of shaping something real with my own hands.
What’s included
Your afternoon includes all locally forged tools and pristine Naxos marble blocks to work on, plus bottled water and your choice of coffee or tea throughout. You’ll have hands-on instruction from Maggie Ross in a relaxed outdoor setting—and you’ll take home your own finished relief sculpture at the end.
