The experience
Grimantis Marble Art Garden sits in a valley between the villages of Eggares, Galini and Amitis Beach, tucked near the Engares River. You cross a reed-lined riverbed to reach it. The setting is part of the lesson: you work outdoors in the open air, surrounded by the sounds of the valley, not in a studio. The instructor teaches both marble carving and mosaic techniques in the same session, so you choose which one to pursue as you arrive. If you want to carve, you get a block of Naxos white marble and a small stone for relief work. If you prefer mosaics, you work with natural crystalline marble and granite pebbles collected from Naxos beaches, arranged in the way ancient craftspeople did. Design inspiration can come from archaic motifs, or you bring your own ideas.
All hand tools, hammers, files, sandpaper and safety glasses are provided. The instructor speaks English and Greek and works with you through the three hours, adjusting to your pace whether you're a complete beginner or have done some stone work before. Halfway through, you take a break for fresh lemonade, coffee or tea, and fruit from the garden. By the end of the session, your finished piece (whether a carved relief or a mosaic) is yours to take home.
What’s included
- All hand tools, marble block or stone pebbles, safety glasses, sandpaper and files.
