You cook in a wood-fired oven and eat what you made at a family table.

A cooking class at a working farmhouse in the Peloponnese, hosted by Gerasimos, Tina, and Stelios near Mycenae, where you prepare traditional Greek dishes using the family's own olive oil and herbs, then share the meal with wine from the Nemea Cooperative. The class runs about three and a half hours and includes all ingredients, utensils, and beverages. It ends with a Sirtaki dance. English and Greek guides are available. Minimum age is 16.

The experience

The farmhouse sits next to Mycenae, and the day starts in the courtyard with chilled ouzo and traditional Greek snacks. You'll work alongside your hosts to prepare dishes like yemista (tomatoes stuffed with rice and herbs), spetsofai (sausage and pepper stew), tzatziki, and choriatiki salad. Everything cooks slowly in the wood-fired oven that anchors the courtyard. The same one the family has used for generations. While the food cooks, you'll learn to make natural soap using olive oil and honey from the grandmother's recipe, a small skill that sits between courses.

The meal itself is the centerpiece. You set a long family table together, and everything you cooked arrives at once: the yemista, the spetsofai, the salads you prepared, plus feta cheese and wine from the historic Nemea Cooperative. The hosts eat with you, not apart from you. The ingredients come from the garden and the mountain slopes around the house: wild oregano, thyme, rosemary, and the family's own olive oil. Nothing is imported or store-bought.

The class ends with a Sirtaki dance before you leave. You'll need to bring your own good mood, as the hosts say. Everything else, from aprons to wine glasses to the ouzo at the start, is already there.

Is this one for you? This suits travelers who want to cook rather than watch a demonstration, and who are comfortable in a shared, social setting where eating together is the point. The farmhouse sits next to Mycenae but is not a sightseeing tour. You'll spend the whole time cooking and at the table, not visiting ruins or landmarks.
