The Experience

“You see that line? That’s where the Black Aragvi meets the White,” our guide, Giorgi, pointed out as we leaned over the bridge near Pasanauri. I squinted — he was right. Two rivers, one dark as coffee, one almost silvery, running side by side but not mixing for a while. It was weirdly hypnotic. The air smelled like wet stone and pine needles; someone nearby was grilling mtsvadi and the smoke drifted over. We’d already stopped at Zhinvali Dam earlier that morning — honestly, I didn’t expect the water to be so blue or the hills so green. There were fishermen on the bank waving at us like they knew we were tourists (maybe they did).

Ananuri Fortress was next. Giorgi told us how it used to guard this whole valley — he even showed us where arrows would’ve flown from those old stone slits. The walls felt cold under my hand, mossy in places. Inside, a local woman sold churchkhela from a basket; she let me try a piece for free (it’s chewy, sweet, kind of nutty). After that came Gudauri — we stopped at the Friendship Monument. The mural inside is wild: colors everywhere, people riding horses and shaking hands, all against this wind that nearly took my hat off. You can see forever up there; it made me feel small in a good way.

Lunch in Pasanauri was loud — families shouting across tables, plates of khinkali steaming up my glasses. Giorgi taught us how to eat them without making a mess (I failed). Then Kvesheti village for honey tasting: I still remember the smell — floral but earthy too. The beekeeper poured a tiny glass of chacha for us after; it burned going down but everyone laughed anyway. By afternoon we reached Stepantsminda — or Kazbegi as Giorgi kept calling it (“Old habits,” he shrugged). The drive up to Gergeti Trinity Church felt like climbing into clouds; sheep blocking the road every few minutes.

The church itself sits above everything at 2,170 meters — wind whipping around you, bells echoing off rock somewhere behind us. I tried just standing there quietly for a minute (not easy with everyone snapping photos). Mount Kazbek loomed behind like something out of a myth. On the way back I kept thinking about that view — how you can’t really photograph what it feels like to be up there with your face stinging from cold and your pockets full of sticky churchkhela wrappers.
