Two rivers meet in one valley, and the fortress that watched them for centuries is still standing.

A guided day trip from Tbilisi through the Georgian Military Highway, stopping at Ananuri Fortress, Zhinvali Water Reservoir, Pasanauri, Gudauri and Stepantsminda with views of Mount Kazbek. The tour runs 11 hours with a live English or Russian-speaking guide, air-conditioned transport, honey and chacha tasting, and restaurant stops included; Gergeti Trinity Church is optional and requires a separate jeep fee at the entrance. Winter snowfall (December through February) may close access to Gergeti, though all other stops remain available.

Step-by-step itinerary

Scenic mountain route and cultural sites

  • Visit Zhinvali Dam
  • Explore Ananuri Fortress
  • See Pasanauri river confluence
  • Enjoy honey and chacha tasting in Zemo Mleta
  • Discover Gudauri Panorama and Friendship Monument
  • Explore Stepantsminda town
  • Optional visit to Gergeti Trinity Church

The Experience

You leave Tbilisi in the morning and head north on the Georgian Military Highway, climbing into the Caucasus. The first real stop is Ananuri Fortress, perched on the Aragvi River—ancient towers and stone walls that have stood for centuries, with views down the gorge that explain why someone built it there. From there the road follows the river upstream through Pasanauri, where the Black Aragvi and White Aragvi rivers meet and actually look different colors as they flow together. The contrast is real enough that locals have named the rivers for it.

The day includes stops at Zhinvali Water Reservoir, where turquoise water sits ringed by mountains, and a tasting of local honey and chacha—the traditional Georgian grape brandy—in Zemo Mleta. Restaurant stops happen along the way so you're not hungry, though meals themselves aren't included in the price. Gudauri comes next, a ski town on the high plateau with the Friendship Monument and panoramic views across the range. The road keeps climbing to Stepantsminda, the last town before the mountains close in, where Mount Kazbek dominates the skyline. Gergeti Trinity Church sits on a ridge above the town with the mountain behind it; visiting requires an optional jeep ride paid in cash at the entrance ($8 or 20 Georgian lari). In winter, heavy snow can block the road to Gergeti, but the tour continues with all safely accessible stops.

A live guide travels with you the whole 11 hours in English or Russian, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. The 4x4 jeep option for reaching Gergeti is separate and optional—you decide at the site whether to go. If you're a first-time visitor to Georgia or you want to see the mountain landscape without renting a car or piecing together public transport, this route covers the major stops in a single day.

Top questions

What is Ananuri Fortress and why does the tour stop there?

Ananuri Fortress sits on the banks of the Aragvi River and dates back centuries, its ancient towers and stone architecture preserved well enough to walk through. The site is a landmark of Georgian history and the location itself—perched above the river gorge—makes it a natural photo stop on the drive north.

Can I visit Gergeti Trinity Church, and what does it cost?

Gergeti Trinity Church is optional and requires a separate jeep ride from Stepantsminda, paid directly at the entrance for $8 (or 20 Georgian lari). In winter, heavy snowfall between December and February may make the road impassable, in which case the tour continues with all other safely accessible stops.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Lunch is not included. The tour stops at restaurants along the route so you can eat without having to plan it yourself, but you pay for your meal separately at those stops.

How long is the whole tour, and what's included in the price?

The tour runs 11 hours from Tbilisi and includes the air-conditioned vehicle, a live guide in English or Russian, honey and chacha tasting, and all transport to the stops. Restaurant stops are arranged but meals are not included; the optional jeep to Gergeti Church is paid separately in cash.

What happens if snow blocks the road in winter?

During winter (approximately December 20 through February 20), heavy snowfall can close access to Gergeti Trinity Church. If that happens, the tour continues with all other safely accessible locations—Ananuri, Zhinvali, Pasanauri, Gudauri and Stepantsminda—so you still see the main route and Mount Kazbek.

Do I need my own car or special driving skills for this tour?

No. The tour provides the vehicle and driver; you sit as a passenger for the full 11 hours. The 4x4 jeep to Gergeti is optional and driven by someone else, so no special skills are needed.
