Five stops across Georgia's mountain history: fortress, monument, reservoir views, monastery and lunch on Kazbegi's slopes

A private day trip from Gudauri covering nine to eleven hours visits the 16th-century Ananuri Fortress Complex, the Friendship Monument, Jinvali Water Reservoir, and the 14th-century Gergeti Holy Trinity Monastery overlooking Mount Kazbegi at 5054m. An English-speaking guide drives the route, entry to all four sites is included, and the day ends with lunch on the veranda of Rooms Hotel facing the mountain.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Kazbegi and Ananuri Mountains

  • Photo shoot at Jinvali Water Reservoir
  • Visit Ananuri Fortress Complex
  • See Friendship Monument and views
  • Visit Gergeti Holy Trinity Monastery
  • Lunch at Rooms Hotel veranda

The Experience

The drive starts at Jinvali Water Reservoir, where you stop for photos and browse the souvenir market before moving on to Ananuri Fortress Complex. The fortress dates to the 16th and 17th centuries and sits on a hillside overlooking the Mtkvari River; your guide walks you through the defence system and explains how it protected the region in ancient times. From there the route continues to the Friendship Monument, another photo stop with views across the landscape.

The final major stop is Gergeti Holy Trinity Monastery, built in the 14th century and perched on a slope with Mount Kazbegi (5054m) and Kuro Mountain (4071m) rising behind it. You walk the monastery grounds and stand in front of the mountain views the site is known for. Lunch follows on the veranda of Rooms Hotel, also positioned to face Kazbegi; you choose what to eat from the menu. The guide speaks English throughout and handles all driving; entry fees to the fortress, monument, monastery and reservoir are included in the price.

If weather prevents the road from reaching the monastery, a 4x4 vehicle is available for an additional charge of 60 GEL per car. The tour suits families with infants and small children—car seats and prams are available—and requires no particular fitness level, though the day runs long and involves walking at each stop.
