The experience

How do you fit Georgia's medieval turning point, a monastery on a mountain, and seventy buildings of folk architecture into one day? This tour strings them together in a single arc: you start at Turtle Lake on Tbilisi's edge (a weekend gathering spot and concert venue 686 meters above sea level), then move into the Open Air Museum of Ethnography, where fifty-two hectares hold traditional houses moved from every region of the country. Watchtowers from Khevsureti, wooden houses from western Georgia, Kakhetian wineries, stone mills and over 8,000 household objects fill eleven zones. The museum was founded by ethnographer Giorgi Chitaia in 1966 and still stands as the country's largest open-air collection of its kind.

The route then climbs to Kojori Fortress, whose earliest stones date to the late 11th century but whose modern shape came from the 16th through 18th centuries. A monument on the heights marks the 1921 battle where Georgian cadets fought the Red Army. From there you reach Udzo Monastery, perched on a mountain at 1,416 meters, where a centuries-old legend draws childless women to pray beneath a tree still called the Christmas tree. The monastery sits on the same ridge where St. George's Day (a moving Christian holiday held on the Tuesday after Easter) brings crowds from nearby villages each year.

The day ends at Didgori Valley itself, where on August 12, 1121, King David IV of Georgia defeated a vastly larger Seljuq army under Ilghazi. The Muslim forces could not maneuver in the valley's terrain, and the Georgian victory was so complete it ended the entire Georgian-Seljuk wars. Within a year, David reclaimed Tbilisi and moved the capital there from Kutaisi, opening what Georgians call their medieval Golden Age. The battle is still celebrated every September as Didgoroba. The whole loop covers 155 kilometers and runs nine hours with your guide, air-conditioned transport, bottled water and WiFi on board.

What is the Open Air Museum of Ethnography, and what will I actually see there?

The Giorgi Chitaia Open Air Museum is a fifty-two-hectare open-air collection of seventy buildings and over 8,000 traditional objects moved from every major region of Georgia. You'll walk through eleven zones displaying watchtowers from the mountainous provinces, wooden houses with gable roofs from western Georgia, stone houses from the east, Kakhetian wineries, water mills, and household items like distaffs, carpets, pottery and furniture: a living map of how Georgians built and lived across the country.

Why is the Battle of Didgori important to Georgia?

The Battle of Didgori on August 12, 1121, was the decisive victory that ended the Georgian-Seljuk wars. King David IV's army defeated a much larger Muslim force under Ilghazi, and within a year the Georgians reclaimed Tbilisi and moved their capital there from Kutaisi. The battle opened what Georgians call their medieval Golden Age and is still celebrated annually as Didgoroba in September.

What is Udzo Monastery, and why do people visit it?

St. George Fathers' Monastery stands on Udzo Mountain at 1,416 meters. According to legend, a childless man built a church and asked St. George for a child. His prayer was answered, and since then childless women have come to pray beneath a tree still called the Christmas tree. St. George's Day, a moving Christian holiday held on the Tuesday after Easter, draws crowds from nearby villages each year.

Is lunch included in this tour?

Lunch is not included. You'll need to arrange a meal stop during the nine-hour day. Your guide can recommend options along the route.

What should I wear and bring for this tour?

Comfortable shoes and a warm jacket are recommended for the full day of walking and the elevation changes. If you plan to enter Georgian Orthodox churches at Udzo Monastery or elsewhere, women should wear a head scarf and dress. Men should avoid short trousers. Scarves and dresses are available near church entrances if you need them.
