You’ll travel deep into Georgia’s mountain heart—exploring ancient fortresses, tasting local snacks, and hiking to Gergeti Trinity Church with sweeping views of Mount Kazbegi. It’s a full day packed with stories, scenery, and moments you won’t forget.
The drive out of Tbilisi started early—just as the city was waking up. Our guide Tamaz knew every twist of the Georgian Military Highway. First stop: Ananuri Fortress. The air smelled faintly of pine and wood smoke from a nearby roadside vendor grilling corn. We wandered the old stone walls, peeking through arrow slits at Lake Zhinvali below—its water almost impossibly blue against the hills. Tamaz pointed out carvings on the church door that most people walk right past. He told us stories about the Aragvi clan who once ruled these lands; you could almost picture them watching for invaders from those towers.
Back on the road, we passed tiny villages where cows wandered lazily across our path. By midday, clouds started rolling over the mountains as we reached Gudauri. Even off-season, there’s a buzz—paragliders catching thermals above us and local kids selling churchkhela (those nutty grape snacks) by the roadside. The views stretch forever here; it’s easy to see why skiers and hikers love this place.
Stepantsminda felt quieter—almost hushed under Kazbegi’s shadow. The hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church was steeper than I’d expected (bring good shoes!), but worth every step. At the top, wind whipped around us and bells clanged softly from the medieval tower beside the church. Our guide shared how locals still trek up here for weddings and special blessings. Standing there with my boots in the grass and clouds drifting past Kazbek’s peak—it just felt real, like you’re part of something old and important.
The trail is about 3 km each way with some steep sections. Most people in average shape can do it—just wear sturdy shoes and take your time.
Lunch isn’t included but there are options in Stepantsminda or at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi if you want something special. You can also pack snacks for along the way.
