The experience

The last stretch up to Gergeti Trinity Church is bumpy. You swap into these battered 4WDs that rattle your bones but somehow make you feel like an explorer. When we finally climbed out near the top, I tasted mountain honey from a roadside stall (sticky fingers for hours after). The church sits above everything: tiny against Mount Kazbek but somehow stubborn too. It’s quiet up there. Even the cows seem respectful. I still think about that silence sometimes.

On the way back we stopped for dinner in Mleta: a simple place with steaming plates of khinkali and locals who nod hello without fussing over tourists. Maybe it was just hunger or maybe mountain air does something to food because those dumplings were perfect.
