The Experience

Ever wonder what it feels like to stand where clouds brush your face? That’s sort of how it started for me—half asleep in Tbilisi, then jolted awake by the idea of a day trip to Kazbegi. Our guide, Giorgi, had this habit of humming old folk songs as we wound out of the city. The minibus was warm and smelled faintly of diesel and someone’s breakfast khachapuri. I didn’t expect the Zhinvali Reservoir to be so blue. Giorgi pointed out where an entire town once stood under all that water. He said sometimes in winter you can see the old church poke through. Gave me chills thinking about it.

Ananuri Fortress felt heavy with stories—literally, those stones are cold even in June. We wandered through archways while Giorgi told us about rival clans and uprisings (he acted out a sword fight with his umbrella, which cracked everyone up). The air there is sharp and piney; you can hear the river below if you stop talking for a second. At Gudauri we pulled over at that huge round monument—bright murals inside, wind whipping so hard my hat nearly flew to Russia. I tried saying “Friendship Monument” in Georgian; Li laughed at my accent but honestly, everyone was just grinning at the view.

The last stretch up to Gergeti Trinity Church is bumpy—you swap into these battered 4WDs that rattle your bones but somehow make you feel like an explorer. When we finally climbed out near the top, I tasted mountain honey from a roadside stall (sticky fingers for hours after). The church sits above everything—tiny against Mount Kazbek but somehow stubborn too. It’s quiet up there; even the cows seem respectful. I still think about that silence sometimes.

On the way back we stopped for dinner in Mleta—a simple place with steaming plates of khinkali and locals who nod hello without fussing over tourists. Maybe it was just hunger or maybe mountain air does something to food because those dumplings were perfect. We drove home mostly quiet, watching dusk fall over the valleys—a little tired, but not wanting it to end just yet.
