The Experience

Ever wonder what it feels like to stand where two rivers meet and realize this was once the center of an entire kingdom? That’s how we started our day trip from Tbilisi to Mtskheta. The air was chilly but smelled faintly of cypress as our guide, Nino, pointed at the Jvari Monastery perched above us. She told stories about saints and invaders—I tried to picture it all, but honestly, I kept getting distracted by the way the light caught on the stone walls. There were other travelers around but everyone fell quiet for a moment when church bells echoed across the valley. I didn’t expect that part.

We drove on to Gori next—Stalin’s hometown. The Stalin Museum is… well, strange and fascinating at the same time. Old photographs everywhere, his childhood house preserved behind glass. Our group whispered more than talked here. Nino joked that even Georgians feel weird about it sometimes. Afterward, lunch was at a small place nearby (I never caught the name), with khinkali so juicy I nearly burned my tongue—worth it though. The tablecloths had tiny embroidered grapes; I remember because one of them snagged my sleeve and made me laugh.

Uplistsikhe was last—honestly, I’d seen pictures but nothing prepares you for walking through those rock tunnels cut into the cliffside. Windy up there, dust in your shoes and hair. We scrambled over stones older than most countries; Nino showed us carvings from pagan times right next to crosses scratched by early Christians. It felt both heavy and oddly peaceful. By then the sun was low and everything looked gold for a minute or two before shadows took over.
