The drive north from Tbilisi takes you through landscape that shifts from city to river valley to high mountain. A short drive brings you to the spot where the Aragvi rivers meet, and then lunch at a Georgian restaurant where you eat before the afternoon climbs.

The second half of the day is vertical. You pass the Monument Friendship of Nations and then drive to Gergeti Trinity Church, which sits on a mountainside at 2,200 meters: high enough that the air changes and the view opens to Mount Kazbegi, Georgia's highest peak at 5,054 meters, rising in the distance. From the church, the route descends slightly to Dariali Gorge for more views, and then to the trailhead for Gveleti waterfall. The hike itself is 40 minutes one way, graded easy to medium, and ends at a waterfall in a narrow ravine. Weather and season matter here: the hike does not run in winter or when conditions are poor. The return drive to Tbilisi takes about two and a half hours.

Your guide speaks English or Russian and travels with you the whole day, driving a private minivan, sedan, 4x4 or minibus depending on your group size.
