The experience
The boat leaves Paofai Garden dock with your captain and naturalist guide, heading toward the Papeete pass while the guide shares stories about the Teporionu district and the marine life you might spot. The first snorkeling stop is the stingray site, where you enter clear water to observe stingrays, eagle rays and boxfish moving through the natural channel. This is not a touch tank. You stay at a respectful distance and watch them drift past in their own space.
The Papa Whiskey "aquarium" comes next, a site known for exceptionally clear water and an unusual underwater landscape: the remains of a plane that crashed in the 1980s, historic whaleboats from around 1890–1900, and a submerged desk with a laptop on the seabed, all set against one of Tahiti's most striking shades of blue. Your guide points out the Taapuna wave, an iconic surf spot, and explains how the passes form and why coral reef preservation matters to the ecosystem. At the Sapinus site near the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands, a freshwater spring rises just 3 meters below the surface, and green sea turtles live here year-round. They move slowly and calmly as long as you keep your distance.
The day ends on a shallow sandbank surrounded by turquoise water, where you eat a traditional Tahitian poisson cru (raw fish in coconut sauce) with white rice and local vegetables, accompanied by fruit juice, water, local beer or a maitai punch. The whole experience runs 4.5 hours. Snorkeling equipment, towels and reef-friendly sunscreen are provided. You bring your own swimsuit and arrange your own transport from your accommodation to Paofai Garden dock.
