Snorkeling in Tahiti: Sea Scooter Safari with Guide
An underwater scooter cuts the swimming effort and lets you cover more reef in a single morning.
Snorkel Tahiti's lagoon on an underwater scooter with a live guide, visiting the Aquarium, White Valley, the Source and Mont Rae Rae to spot rays, sharks, turtles and coral gardens. Groups stay small—2 to 7 people—and the guide speaks English, Spanish or French. Pickup is included, and the activity runs four hours.
The Experience
You arrive at the boat near Punaauia with snorkeling gear already waiting—fins, mask, snorkel and a shorty wetsuit. The guide walks you through the scooter in a few minutes; it is designed to be intuitive, and most people are comfortable on it before the boat leaves the dock. Once in the water, the scooter does the work of propulsion, so you steer and observe instead of kicking hard to keep up. That changes what you can see: you move faster between sites, you arrive less tired, and you can linger longer at each stop without burning out.
The four sites rotate depending on conditions and what is moving that day. The Aquarium holds plane and boat wrecks sitting in a coral garden, and the guide points out the species living in and around them—rays, needlefish, flute fish, the small sharks that are harmless and curious. The White Valley is a pass where sharks and sometimes dolphins move through; the Source is where turtles gather in numbers and eagle rays hunt. Mont Rae Rae sits near a sailboat wreck and is known for leopard rays gliding overhead. Between August and November, humpback whales pass through the area, and you may hear them underwater or spot them from the boat. The guide stays with the group the whole time, pointing out what is moving and explaining what you are seeing.
The boat carries bottled water, snacks, coffee, tea and fruit juice. The guide photographs and films the day and shares the files with you afterward. The whole outing runs four hours from pickup to return, and it is designed to work for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike. Small groups—never more than seven—mean you are not competing for the guide's attention or the best vantage at each site.

What is it like to use an underwater scooter if I have never tried one?
The scooter is designed for beginners and takes only a few minutes to learn. You hold it in front of you, steer with your hands, and it propels you forward so you use far less energy than swimming. The guide familiarizes you with it before the group enters the water, and you stay in the shallow lagoon until you are comfortable.
What animals will I actually see on this snorkel in Tahiti?
The four sites are chosen for different marine life. The Aquarium has rays and small sharks around wrecks and coral; the White Valley brings you to passes where larger sharks and dolphins move; the Source is where turtles gather in numbers along with eagle rays and barracudas; Mont Rae Rae is known for leopard rays. The guide cannot guarantee any single species on any single day, but these sites are selected because encounters are frequent.
How many people will be in my group?
Groups stay between 2 and 7 people, so you are never in a large crowd competing for the guide's attention or space at each reef site.
Is this activity hard on my body?
The scooter removes the physical demand of swimming long distances, which makes it accessible to most fitness levels. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and the maximum weight is 265 lbs (120 kg).
What language does the guide speak?
The guide is live and speaks English, Spanish or French, so you can request your preferred language at booking.
Does pickup from my hotel come with this snorkel?
Yes, pickup is included in the price. The boat operates near Punaauia, and the guide arranges collection from your accommodation.
