The Experience

I didn’t know what pineapple smelled like before it’s picked—sort of sharp and earthy, not as sweet as you’d think. We set off from the Top Quad Club in Moorea with helmets a bit askew (mine kept slipping), engines humming under our hands. Our guide, Teva, grinned at us in the mirror and shouted something about “rain is luck” when a few drops hit my arm. I wasn’t sure if he meant it or was just making us feel better about the muddy trail ahead.

The ATV handled the bumps better than I did. We zigzagged through the crater’s pineapple fields, leaves brushing my legs and that strange green smell everywhere. Teva stopped now and then to point out a plant or let us taste wild guava—tiny, tart, made my mouth pucker. At the agricultural school we parked for homemade jam; honestly, I could’ve eaten a whole jar of that stuff with a spoon. Li laughed when I tried to say “merci” in Tahitian (I definitely butchered it), but everyone was patient with us.

Belvedere Lookout was quieter than I expected—just wind and birds for company while we stared down at Cook Bay and Opunohu Bay, both so blue they looked fake. The climb up Magic Mountain was steeper than any road back home; my heart thumped louder than the engine for a minute there. But at the top… well, I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic. Coming back down was easier. We finished sticky with sweat and mud at the club, sipping fresh fruit juice that tasted like sunshine—corny but true.
