The experience

The boat operator, Teva, was already loading gear when we arrived at the dock: he'd worked the Bora Bora lagoon for twelve years and moved with the kind of ease that comes from knowing exactly where the rays congregate and when. He handed out snorkeling equipment without fuss, checked the fit on masks, and pointed toward the water where the first stop would be. The lagoon safari starts early enough that the light hits the coral gardens at an angle that makes the colors almost unreal: deep purples, electric yellows, the kind of blue you can't quite believe is real until you're floating above it.
