The Experience

The moment the helmet settles over your head, the sound changes — a hollow, pressurized quiet that makes the outside world feel very far away. Water rises around you, and then you're stepping down onto sand 3 meters below the surface of Bora Bora's lagoon, your feet finding solid ground while fish scatter and regroup around your shoulders. The whole experience runs two and a half hours, but the underwater part is 30 minutes — long enough to move through the coral garden, to let your eyes adjust, to stop being afraid. A professional diving instructor stays with you the entire time, pointing out moray eels tucked into crevices, stingrays that glide past like underwater pancakes, butterfly fish in colors that don't seem real until you're standing three meters down looking at them.
