The experience

Nathalie and Jean Michel run this vineyard themselves, a few kilometers outside Aix-en-Provence on land that has grown grapes for centuries. The activity opens with a walk through the vines with their master cellar keeper, who explains the Provençal terroir and the organic farming methods that bring the grapes to maturity. You move from the vineyard into the historic cellar of Château l'Evesque, where Jean Michel walks you through the winemaking process for each color: how white, rosé and red wines are made from the same grapes, and what changes between them.

The tasting happens in their aging cellar, where Nathalie guides you through a lineup of seven wines: two whites, two rosés, three reds, and the domaine's specialty blend. You taste what you've just learned to make, which changes how the wine reads: the acidity, the tannin, the fruit you now know came from the vines you walked through an hour before. The whole experience runs 2.5 hours, and the guide speaks French throughout.

What exactly do I do during the vineyard walk?

You walk through the vines with the master cellar keeper, who explains the Provençal terroir, the organic farming practices, and how the grapes reach maturity. It is an introduction to how the vineyard works, not a long hike.

Do I need to know anything about wine before I come?

No. Jean Michel teaches the winemaking process from the start in the cellar, and Nathalie guides the tasting. The activity is built for people who want to learn, not people who already know.

How many wines do I taste, and what kinds?

Seven wines total: two whites, two rosés, three reds, and the domaine's specialty blend. You taste across all three colors to see how the same vineyard produces different styles.

Is this activity suitable for someone with no French?

The guide speaks French. If you do not speak French, you may want to arrange a translator or consider whether this fits your comfort level, as the winemaking explanations and tasting notes are delivered in French.

How far is this from Aix-en-Provence?

The vineyard is a few kilometers outside Aix-en-Provence. Public transportation options are available nearby if you do not have a car.
