The experience
Your guide meets you at the equestrian statue of Louis XIV in the palace forecourt, then leads you straight past the entrance queues with skip-the-line access. The gardens come first: you'll walk through the formal grounds and past the mythical fountains that took 30 years to restore under Gerald Van Der Kamp's direction. The guide explains the layout and the history as you move through the estate, then brings you into the palace itself.
Inside, the tour splits the public from the private. You see the grand apartments and the Hall of Mirrors (the ceremonial spaces where court members and visitors were allowed), but the real draw is what comes next: the King's Apartments, the petit appartement du roi. These were the intimate living quarters of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, sealed off from public view and requiring the king's personal permission to enter. Your guide takes you through the porcelain-clad dining hall, the bathing chambers, and the rooms where the king kept his private art collection, including a pendulum constellation clock and an equestrian statuette. Depending on the day, you'll also see the opera house or cathedral as part of the apartments tour.
When the guided portion ends, you're free to wander the estate on your own. Your Versailles Passport Ticket gives you access to the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet, so you can spend as long as you want exploring those grounds without a guide.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 17 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What exactly are the King's Apartments, and why are they different from the rest of the palace?
The King's Apartments, or petit appartement du roi, were the private living quarters of the French monarchs: separate from the grand public apartments where court members and visitors were received. These intimate chambers, including dining halls and bathing rooms, were off-limits to the public and required the king's personal permission to enter, making them a hidden side of palace life most visitors never see.
Do I have to stay with the guide the whole time, or can I explore on my own?
The guide leads you through the gardens, palace and King's Apartments for about three hours, then leaves you to explore independently. After that, you're free to wander the estate at your own pace, including the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon and Queen's Hamlet, all covered by your Versailles Passport Ticket.
What's included in the Versailles Passport Ticket?
The Versailles Passport Ticket gives you access to the entire estate: the Palace of Versailles, the Gardens, the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet. Your guided tour covers the gardens, palace and King's Apartments. After that, the ticket lets you explore the Trianon properties on your own.
How many people are on this tour?
The tour is limited to a maximum of six guests, keeping it small and intimate rather than a large group experience.
What should I know before I arrive?
Arrive 15 minutes early at the meeting point near the equestrian statue of Louis XIV in the palace forecourt. Security measures at Versailles are strict, so punctuality matters. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, and strollers are welcome for infants and small children. Public transportation is available nearby if you're traveling from elsewhere in the region.
