The Experience

We met our guide just outside the Versailles train station—he waved a baguette at us like a flag (apparently lunch for later). After sorting out helmets and bikes (mine squeaked a bit but honestly, so do my knees), we rolled off into the gardens. The air was sharp, grass still damp from last night’s rain. I tried to pronounce “Hameau de la Reine” properly; he laughed and said even Parisians mess it up sometimes. There was this faint smell of woodsmoke in the air near one of the little bridges—maybe someone was baking bread? I don’t know, but it made me hungry.

The ride over to Petit Trianon was easy enough except for one hill where my legs nearly gave up—I pretended to stop for a photo but really just needed a breather. Inside the main palace itself, we finally got off our bikes and wandered through those famous halls. The Hall of Mirrors is as shiny as everyone says but somehow quieter than I imagined; maybe it was just our group or maybe it’s always like that in late afternoon light. I caught my reflection in one of the mirrors and felt weirdly connected to all those people who’ve walked here before. Hard to explain.
