Les Baux de Provence opens the day with free time to wander the medieval village perched on a limestone cliff, surrounded by the soft-hued countryside that has drawn painters and photographers for centuries. The route north to Avignon passes the Pont du Gard, a three-tiered Roman aqueduct that still carries its original engineering intact. Admission is included, though the museum entrance is separate. You walk around the structure and cross the lower level on foot. The scale of it becomes clear only when you stand beneath the arches.
