The Experience

The day starts early from Paris and heads northwest toward the Normandy coast. Your guide, a licensed historian fluent in English, frames the route itself as part of the story—the roads the troops traveled, the geography that shaped the strategy. By mid-morning you're standing on Omaha Beach, one of the five landing zones, where the 4th Infantry Division came ashore on June 6, 1944. The beach is quiet now, but the guide walks you through what happened there: the obstacles in the sand, the bluffs above, the scale of the operation. Museum tickets are included, so you move through the exhibits without stopping to buy entry at the door.

From Omaha, the route turns to Pointe du Hoc, the jagged headland where US Army Rangers climbed the cliff face under fire to destroy German gun emplacements. The Rangers used ropes and ladders; the climb took minutes but changed the outcome of the landing. You walk the clifftop, see the bomb craters still visible in the grass, and stand where the Rangers stood. The guide does not invent drama—the place carries it. Lunch follows at a local restaurant where you eat regional Normandy fare and rest before the final stop.

The American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer holds 9,387 graves, most of them marked with white crosses in perfect rows, some with Stars of David. The guide does not rush this part. You walk among the headstones, read the names and dates, and the scale of loss becomes concrete. The memorial building overlooks the beach where many of these men landed. The tour ends here, and the drive back to Paris takes the late afternoon and early evening.
