The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the wind—sharp off the Channel, carrying this salty tang that stuck to my lips. We’d left Paris before sunrise (I barely remember coffee), but by the time our minivan rolled into Calvados and we stood at Pointe du Hoc, I was wide awake. I still think about that view down toward Omaha Beach from up there; it sticks with you.

We ended in Arromanches where bits of Mulberry Harbour are still scattered out in the surf—huge concrete blocks just sitting there like they’re waiting for something. The town itself is small and kind of cheerful despite everything it remembers. I grabbed a coffee at a café where an old man nodded at my sand-filled jar and grinned (maybe he’d seen hundreds).
