The experience

The day starts before dawn when the driver picks you up at your Paris hotel. The drive to Normandy takes roughly four hours, with a stop for coffee and a croissant along the way. By mid-morning you're standing at Pointe du Hoc, the clifftop position where the U.S. Army Ranger Assault Group scaled the fortifications and captured the German gun emplacement: part of the Atlantic Wall defensive line. The cliffs themselves are the landscape you navigate. The craters and bunkers remain visible from the assault.

From there the tour moves to Omaha Beach, one of the five landing zones on June 6, 1944. You have time here to walk the sand and take lunch at one of the beachside restaurants: the tour builds in the break but doesn't cover the meal cost. The beach is where you stand and absorb the scale of the landing. The guide provides the context of what happened there and why the position mattered. After Omaha, the route goes to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, established by the U.S. First Army just two days after the landings as a temporary burial ground. The cemetery sits on the site where American soldiers were first interred on European soil during the war.

The full loop (Paris to the three sites and back to your hotel) runs 10 to 12 hours. You get bottled water throughout the day and a guide who speaks English and knows the history of each stop. The pace is set. You're not arranging transport between beaches or figuring out how to reach the cemetery from the coast. The tour ends when you're dropped back at your Paris hotel.
