The experience

You're picked up from your Paris hotel at 7:30 a.m. in a Mercedes E220 or minivan and driven 280 kilometers west toward Normandy. A three-and-a-half-hour journey with one rest stop. The route takes you past the Bois de Boulogne and into the Norman countryside, arriving at the Overlord Museum around 11 a.m. The museum sits just a few hundred meters from the Normandy American Cemetery and holds one of the largest collections of D-Day artifacts: tanks, weapons, military vehicles, a V-1 missile, and personal belongings that give the scale of what happened on those beaches.

By 11:40 a.m. you're at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking Omaha Beach. The cemetery holds 9,387 U.S. soldiers, most killed during the Normandy Landings, and a Wall of the Missing bearing 1,557 names. The visitor center has maps of military operations and a small museum. The grounds themselves include the semicircular memorial colonnade with the sculpture "Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves" and the concrete casemates of German defenses still visible on the cliffs. You spend an hour here before a ten-minute drive to Omaha Beach and the Signal Monument, where you learn about the 34,000 men who landed there on D-Day. A lunch break happens at this stop.

The drive to Mont Saint-Michel takes an hour and forty-five minutes. You arrive around 3 p.m. and have until 6 p.m. to explore the island: time to walk the narrow medieval streets to the abbey at the top and take in the panoramic views over the Atlantic. The abbey's own guides lead an English-language tour (audioguides are offered if the guided tour isn't available that day), and tickets are included. The island was first settled in 709 and the Benedictine Abbey's construction began in the 700s and continued through the 1200s. The whole site is UNESCO-listed and remains largely unchanged since the Middle Ages. At 6 p.m. you depart for the four-hour drive back to Paris, with one rest stop, arriving around 10 p.m.
