The Experience

We met our captain right by the Statue of Liberty on Ile aux Cygnes—he waved, and I nearly tripped over my own feet trying to sound out “Beaugrenelle” in French. He just grinned and helped us aboard, no fuss. The boat felt cozy but not cramped, with this faint scent of river water and something metallic in the air—hard to describe but it’s definitely Paris. We brought a bag of pastries (probably too many) and spread them out on the little table in the cabin while we got moving.

The first thing that hit me: how quiet it was compared to street level. You hear the slap of water against the hull, a distant honk or two from above, but mostly just low conversation and laughter. Our guide pointed out Pont Alexandre III—he called it “the fancy one,” which made me laugh because he’s not wrong—and then suddenly there’s the Eiffel Tower looming so close you feel like you could reach out and touch its iron bones. I tried to get a photo but fumbled my phone; ended up just staring instead.

We drifted past Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre, both looking almost unreal from this angle. There’s something about seeing Paris from the Seine that makes all those famous places feel new again. At Pont des Arts, a couple waved down at us—no idea who they were but we waved back anyway. The breeze picked up as we approached Notre Dame, carrying a whiff of fresh bread from somewhere along the bank (or maybe that was wishful thinking). After looping around Ile Saint Louis, we headed back toward the Eiffel Tower with sunlight flickering off the water. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy at home.
