The Experience

I wasn’t sure what to expect when we met Alexis at the little dock in Suresnes—he waved us over, grinning like we were old friends. The boat felt smaller than I’d pictured (in a good way), and Alexis insisted we sit up front for the best view. Alexis told us how it was built for the 1889 Universal Exhibition—I’d heard that before but seeing it from below, all steel bones against the sky, made it feel new again. He kept tossing in little facts about bridges—the golden statues on Pont Alexandre III, or how Pont des Arts nearly collapsed under love locks (Li laughed remembering our failed attempt at a padlock years ago). The city felt both familiar and strange from this angle; even Musée d'Orsay looked different gliding by.

There was a moment near Pont Neuf where everything got quiet except for our boat wake and some distant music drifting from a riverside café.
